Chapter 8 : Dancing in a Masaï Village

for high resolution files: julienmg@gmail.com

After singing with Masai schoolboys, we had to go and dance with the Masaï ! We got to a village close to the Ngorongoro crater. The Masaï are friendly people, despite the fact that they are always wearing knives, swords, spears or staffs. They obey strict rules during all their lives, such as :
they dress with Masaï clothing, with red, blue or purple colours, not only for tourists, always - they speak the Masaï language - they live in the traditionnal Masai village - they live of they cattle, they don't cultivate - they move with the cattle - they get married with Masaï people (they can have many wives if they can afford to - 15 cows for a wife average price on the Masai Stock Exchange) - they have to reach adultness and live teenagehood : they spend some time alone in the land and have to survive from all beasts. The Masaï have a strong identity that they try to preserve, and we have to admit that they reached their goal so far.

The Masai Dance : men on one corner, women on another corner, no mix. Men sing and have to jump as high as possible one after the other. Women wear weird necklaces and have to move their body so the necklace is tapping their tits as strong as possible (yeah I know the gut reaction is : what the f... is that s... , so you better simply watch some videos - escpecially the kids, they're hillarious).

Where was that ? Between Olduvai camp and Ngorongoro crater, click here to see.
