The Ngorongoro crater is an incredible almost closed eco-system. It's the biggest non-flooded caldeira on earth. (Dad, what's a Caldeira ? Caldeira son is a portuguese word for "boiler". Imagine a mountain higher than the King Kilimanjaro itself. Such was the Ngorongoro a long time ago, even before your Grandma was born. One day, in a sound even more deafening than a concert of Celine Dion, this mountain, which was a volcano, broke down. (if you didn't get it, try this drawing son : caldeira for dummies.) Ok, so now you know what's a Caldeira. This one is still pretty high : the borders get higher than 2500m, the middle is around 1800m. As you see that quite a mountain to climb for the animals enprisonned in the middle : 700 meters of rocks and forest. So the animals stay in the middle.
